چکیده

Experimental band structure analyses of single-walled carbon nanotubes have not yet been reported, to the best of our knowledge, except for a limited number of reports using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate the experimental determination of the excitonic band structures of single-chirality single-walled carbon nanotubes using their circular dichroism spectra. In this analysis, we use gel column chromatography combining overloading selective adsorption with stepwise elution to separate 12 different single-chirality enantiomers. Our samples show higher circular dichroism intensities than the highest values reported in previous works, indicating their high enantiomeric purity. Excitonic band structure analysis is performed by assigning all observed Eii and Eij optical transitions in the circular dichroism spectra. The results reproduce the asymmetric structures of the valence and conduction bands predicted by density functional theory. Finally, we demonstrate that an extended empirical formula can estimate Eij optical transition energies for any (n,m) species.

Coherent lattice vibrations in single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We have generated and detected coherent lattice vibrations in single-walled carbon nanotubes corresponding to the radial breathing mode (RBM) using ultrashort laser pulses. Because the band gap is a function of diameter, these RBM-induced diameter oscillations cause ultrafast band gap oscillations, thereby modulating the interband excitonic resonances at the phonon frequencies (3-9 THz). Excita...

Racemic single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit circular dichroism when wrapped with DNA.

We have found that racemic mixtures of chiral single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) wrapped with d(GT)20 DNA oligomer exhibit circular dichroism (CD). We attribute the CD signal to induced CD arising from the coupling of transition moments of the SWNTs and the DNA. Although the nanotube mixture appears to contain both enantiomers in equal amounts, DNA-SWNT transition moment interaction is more constr...

Modifying the electronic properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes using designed surfactant peptides.

The electronic properties of carbon nanotubes can be altered significantly by modifying the nanotube surface. In this study, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were functionalized noncovalently using designed surfactant peptides, and the resultant SWCNT electronic properties were investigated. These peptides have a common amino acid sequence of X(Valine)(5)(Lysine)(2), where X indicates an...

Identification of excitonic phonon sideband by photoluminescence spectroscopy of single-walled carbon-13 nanotubes

Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8656, Japan (Received 9 August 2005) Abstract We have studied photoluminescence (PL) and resonant Raman scatterings of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) consisting of carbon-13 (SWCNTs) synthesized from a small amount of isotopically modified ethanol. There was almost no change in the Raman spe...

Halogenated Graphdiyne and Graphyne Single Layers: A Systematic Study

Graphyne and graphdiyne families of flat carbon (sp2/sp) networks with high degrees of π-conjunction are attracting much attention due to their promising electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. In the present investigation we have studied the structural, mechanical, electrical and optical properties of halogenated graphdiyne and graphyne. The optical spectra of pure and halog...
